Dan + Shay Win Their First Grammy Award For “Tequila”

 Dan + Shay have come a long way since they first met on December 7, 2012. With a combination of their talent, hard work ethic, and their genuine personalities, two of their biggest dreams came true at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on February 10, 2019. 

First, they officially became Grammy-Award winners when they accepted the coveted Gramophone trophy for their number one hit “Tequila” in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category. The guys hugged their respective wives before they walked up to the stage to accept their award. “My heart is beating out of my chest, we had no expectations to win this”, Dan Smyers said. He went on to thank a lot of people, including the other artists in the category. “ It’s the beautiful thing about Nashville and country music, we are all family, we all work for each other. I love you guys, you are amazing.” Shay also thanked a group of people and said “To the Recording Academy, I cannot believe that this just happened. I am a little bit blown away and I might be about to pass out.”

 After this milestone win for Dan + Shay, the duo gave a stunning performance of their No. 1 hit “Tequila” on the Grammy stage with Dan on an acoustic guitar singing harmonies and Shay on piano singing lead vocals. Toward the end of the performance, a curtain rose showing a string section that accompanied the duo. Shay surprised the crowd by holding the last note of the song, fully showing his vocal range. The duo received a standing ovation from the large audience at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It still gives me chills to hear Shay hit that high note and hold it at the end of this performance.

“Tequila” is Dan + Shay’s biggest hit to date. They end each of their concerts with this song that really catapulted their careers. I will talk more about this song and its success for the duo in upcoming posts.
